Summer Activities in Northeast Washington

My favorite time of year is summer.  Not only do I enjoy the warm weather, the activities are endless.  Northeast Washington is an awesome place to live or visit during the summer months.  Typically the weather is between 80 degrees to 100 degrees and with all the mountains and water in the area that opens up a vast playground for the outdoor enthusiast.

GARDENING

Our climate is conducive to gardening.  I grow almost anything including cantaloupe and watermelon.  I am located not far off of Lake Roosevelt so my orchard also does well producing: apples, peaches, pears, apricots and cherries.  You will need a fence to keep the deer out, but the fresh produce is well worth the effort.  If you are not a gardener you may want to take advantage of our local farmers market. Either way you will find an outlet for fresh produce.

HUCKLEBERRIES

One of the more unique activities to do in the summer is to go huckleberry picking.  Huckleberries are dark purple in color and grow wild in the higher elevations.  They taste like a tart blueberry and can be used in many delicious recipes.  Huckleberry season is mid July-mid August and if you choose to buy already harvested berries they will cost you approximately $50.00/ gallon.

 SUMMER OUTDOOR SPORTS

Being surrounded by beautiful mountains lends itself to hiking, biking, horseback riding, off-roading, camping or just enjoying some time with the local wildlife.  In addition, we have all of the lakes and rivers to enjoy.

Lake Roosevelt provides 152 miles of unlimited fun!  Lake Roosevelt is a great place to boat, ski, swim, camp and fish.  There are many varieties of fish in the lake.  The most popular include: Trout, Walleye, Sturgeon, Bass, Pike, Ling cod and a few Crappie & Perch.  If small lakes are more your thing there are a wide variety to chose from.  The banks of Lake Roosevelt are owned by the Park Service and provide sandy beaches, public boat launches, campgrounds and easy access for residents to enjoy this majestic lake.  Looking for a place you can kayak, paddle board or canoe? There are several lakes that are non-motorized that may be just what you are looking for.

Are you more of a river person?  The Kettle River offers a great floating in the summer.  It is best after the 4th of July and goes until about mid August depending on the year.  Most of all you do need to know where to enter and where to get out of the river to avoid floating through “the gorge”.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

Summer also is the time for organized social events.  Town and Country Days, Rendezvous, Chataqua, Colville Rodeo and the Stevens County Fair are just a few. You can tell by the list that your summer can be as full as you want it to be.  Come check out what Northeast Washington has to offer.
